Aker a hit as bush footy coach

Jason Akermanis might have been given the boot from two AFL clubs, but he?s proving a hit at new side North Albury.

Akermanis, who accepted the senior coaching position at the Hoppers in October, has last year's wooden spooners breathing fire in the pre-season.

Hoppers president Paul Spencer said the club was amazed how easily Akermanis had fitted into the club.

"From the very first training he?s impressed everyone with how committed he is to the job," Spencer said.

"The person you hear in the media and the person we see at training couldn't be more different."

Spencer said the hype surrounding the signing of the Brownlow medallist had rejuvenated the club.

"We?ve had more than 50 blokes on the track every night before Christmas, whereas in previous years we would have been lucky to get 25."

"At the end of the day we finished on the bottom last season. But I think with the recruits we've managed to attract and the enthusiasm in the place I?d say finals would be our least expectation."

While the Ovens and Murray league has lost Sydney premiership hero Barry Hall as drawcard for the coming season, the circus surrounding Brendan Fevola looks certain to continue.

Fevola is set to miss Yarrawonga's Round 1 Easter blockbuster as he serves a one-match suspension acquired in the Pigeons' grand final victory.

Rumours are rife the Pigeons are looking for another high-profile recruit to take his place for the match, with almost every player to depart the AFL in recent seasons raised as possibility.

The loophole that allowed Fevola to line up in last year's Easter fixture, despite a similar suspension, is expected to be closed by AFL Victoria Country in the coming months.

The Ovens and Murray league season will begin on March 29 with a Good Friday showdown between cross-town rivals Albury and Lavington.
